DAVID DONTOH

 

David Dontoh is a Ghanaian actor, Director and TV Personality. He is the current Chairman of the Board of the National Film Authority of Ghana and the Proprietor of the DAS Professional Acting Institute (DASPAI) at Zenith University College in Accra.

Dontoh was the first host of Agoro/Agrofie, a local quiz show aired on GTV. He has been featured in movies like “Screen Two,” “No Time to Die,” and “Kukurantumi.” He got famous for his role in “Keteke,” a Television Series.

His Early Life

 

David Dontoh was born on 18 December, 1964 in Cape Coast. He hails from Gyegyeano in the Cape Coast Central Region. Between the ages of 1 and 10, he lived with his mother in Gyegyeano and then lived with his father and stepmother in Winneba. He also lived with his father in Abakrampa and other places in Ghana. He is the only child of his parents, but he has stepbrothers and sisters from each parent.

David Dontoh’s parents are Madam Afua Baduwaa and Mr. Dontoh. David’s mother was the 10th child of her parents and thus was given the name Baduwaa. She was a fish trader from the Kotokuraba Market, Cape Coast.

Mr. Dontoh was an Agriculturalist, Stenographer, and Stationary Trader.

 

His Education

David Dontoh began schooling at Methodist Primary C at Ayekoo-Ayeeko, Cape Coast. Once David was ten years old and went to live with his father in Winneba, he changed to Ankara Middle Boys School.

 David then moved to Abrakrampa with his father and step-siblings and eventually completed his Form 4 at Abakrampa LA Methodist Middle School. He wrote his common entrance and gained admission to Apam Senior High School. He was a Science Student and did English and Poetry as well.

Dontoh was the best English student in Ghana in 1975, and he was also the best literature student.

He was also proficient at Drawing and won second place in an Art competition back in 1973. He was also part of the school’s drama club and a boxer.

Dontoh later continued his education at the School of Performing Arts at the University of Ghana, where he studied Drama and Theatre Art.

David Dontoh is married to Rebecca Dontoh, and they have 3 children.

Relationships

David Dontoh dated Grace Omaboe, also known as Maame Dokono. She is also a movie star. Their relationship saga began during the Obra days, and they dated for years before they both moved on with their lives. David Dontoh dated another actress, and after some time, he began dating his current wife.

 

His Career

As a young boy, David Dontoh had the dream of being a pilot, but that dream soon gave way to being a medical doctor when he was able to stitch a wound for a friend.

David took science at the Apam Senior High School for the necessary grades to get to medical school, but unfortunately, he did not make it. After finishing his Sixth Form at Apam, he worked as a Receptionist in his father’s stationery office in Accra, and one year later he went to live with an auntie in Dansoman, a former employee of USAID. His auntie was undertaking a developmental initiative in Atebubu, and he managed to join her at the Atebubu training college, teachers’ bungalow, where she was.

In 1982, he voluntarily joined so many others for the Kekete Drama Series on GTV. After two episodes of Keteke, in 1984, the name Keteke was changed to Obra.

The Obra Series had stars like Waakye, Maame Dokono, Adwoa Smart, and Station Master. David Dontoh received his nickname “Ghanaman” after the first two series of Keteke, and he was given the nickname “Kofi Abrantie” when they began Obra.

While he was in the Obra, he was still a member of the Ghana Theatre Club. He was still doing theater. “Kukurantumi,” among other movies, featured him and catapulted him into stardom. He became the first host of Agoro on GTV in 1998.

 

His Awards

David Dontoh won the Best Actor Award at the Entertainment Critics and Reviewers Association of Ghana Awards in the years 1984, 1989, and 1992.

He won the Best Supporting and World Centenary of Film Awards at the Ghana Film Awards in 1999.

He received an award at the PAM African Film Festival, as well as the Ghana Actors Guild and Aspa Award in 2000.
