Ralston attended Carnegie Mellon University, receiving a degree in French, a degree in mechanical engineering, and a minor in piano. During college he spent summers as a rafting guide and engaged in other outdoor activities. Ralston graduated and spent time working for Intel as a mechanical engineer in several states before leaving the corporate world in 2002 to pursue his dream of being a Mountaineer full time.

The Canyoneering accident

On April 26, 2003, Ralston’s life changed forever while canyoneering in Bluejohn Canyon, Utah. A boulder shifted and crushed his right arm against the canyon wall, leaving him stranded alone with no cell connection or method of calling for help.

For 5 days, he carefully chewed on 2 burritos and drank water until it quickly ran out, after which he resorted to drinking his urine for hydration. After realizing that help was not coming, he was left with little option but to carve his name and a farewell note (to his relatives) into the wall of the canyon. On the sixth day, he finally made the life-or-death decision to cut off his trapped arm using a dull pocket knife and pliers.

After cutting his arm, he rappelled down a 65 foot cliff and hiked 6 miles until he came across a Dutch family that assisted him in alerting the authorities. He was saved by a helicopter, and his arm was later burnt. Later on his 28th birthday, he sprinkled his arm’s ashes back into Bluejohn Canyon.

As a result, his survival story became one of the most well-known in modern history.
