EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION

Afia Akoto was born on September 1, 1978, in Kwahu in the Eastern Region of Ghana. Afia Akoto is 45 years old and has an education to boast about. She graduated from Aburi Girls Senior High School with a high school certificate. Afia Akoto continued her education later with various other certificates, including getting an LLB from London Business School in the UK, which demonstrates her dedication to education and self-improvement.

 

POLITICAL CAREER

Afia Akoto entered the political realm in 1999, which termed her in Ghana as a loyal and committed member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). Afia Akoto’s amazing talents and skills in leading others gave her important and  great positions in the party. In 2017, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo appointed Afia Akoto as Deputy Speaker of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC). Before this appointment, she was the Deputy Communications Director for the NPP, where she demonstrated her communication and advocacy skills for party policies.

Her service went beyond MASLOC too; she was also the Deputy Chief Executive Officer and a spokesperson of the Alliance For Accountable Governance (AFAG), perhaps aptly demonstrating her reputation for supporting transparency and accountability in governance.

Afia Akoto is an entrepreneur, having owned Adepa Groceries, a business in Accra; however, her impact was not only in business. On September 4, 2020, she established the Afia Akoto Nixon (AAN) Humanitarian Foundation International to improve lives through charity. Her charitable work has reached so many, including donations to the Royal Seed Orphanage, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, and many more.

 

PERSONAL LIFE

Madam Alberta’s personal life was also notable to the public. She was married to Chief Hamilton Biney Nixon, the former Deputy National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Although they belonged to opposing political parties, their marriage sent a sign of unity beyond politics. The two were married on February 12, 2020, at Tantra Hills in Accra.

 

In November 2023, she said in an interview on Adom TV’s “Badwam” program that her marriage was over, calling “Chief Biney” her ex-husband. She has four children.

 

POLITICAL ASPIRATION

Afia Akoto’s desire to serve her community motivated her to become the parliamentary candidate for the NPP in the Okaikwei North Constituency, Greater Accra Region. While she came in second in the election on December 5, 2024, with 228 votes to Nana Ama Dokua Asiamah-Adjei’s 341 votes, her resolve is still unbroken.
