He was born in Ashtown, Kumasi, to Madam Alice Nsiah Apau and the late Mr. Akwasi Nsiah Bota, and he was raised in Fante New Town, Kumasi. Being the third of six children, the others, including his brothers Kwaku Nsiah Boamah (Flowking Stone) and Kwaku Nsiah Amankwah (Kunta Kinte), are also musicians from Kumasi. His father was an accountant, and his mother is a retired teacher. Though there was a desire by his parents for him to become a physician, Kwame got the opportunity to be the extraordinary musician he is today.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

The educational profile of Okyeame Kwame reflects his zeal for the arts as well as the desire to make progress for himself and others. He went to Anglican Senior High School, which is located in Kumasi, and, later on, earned a degree in Akan and Sociology from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). He learned classical guitar and the philosophy of music from Africa under Dr. Daniel Amponsah. He completed a master’s degree in Strategic Marketing in 2016. He graduated from the University of Ghana and became an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana.

Okyeame Kwame married Annica Nsiah-Apau in 2005 after they met in their second year of university. They were then legally married on the 16th of January 2009 and became the face of love and togetherness in Ghana. The couple have two children: Sir Bota Nsiah-Apau and Sante Nsiah-Apau.

MUSIC CAREER: The Journey from Akyeame to Solo Success

Okyeame Kwame began his music journey when he was in his teenage years listening to rap competitions and entertainment nights in high school. In 1992 he partnered with Daniel Quophi Amoateng (Okyeame Quophi) to form the music group WizDan, which was later changed to Akyeame. As a duo, they released four albums including their most successful albums Nyansapɔ, Nkonson Konson, and Ntoasoɔ. With hit songs like “Me San Aba” and “Bra Yen Tina,” they were also critically acclaimed, eventually winning the highest number of awards at the first Ghana Music Awards, including the award for Artist of the Year in 1999.

Okyeame Kwame became a successful solo artist after the group disbanded in 2003 and to date has released five albums as a solo artist. ​ His solo debut album, Bohye Ba (2004); the continuous albums Manwensem (2008) and Made in Ghana (2019); and top artist collaborations with the likes of Daddy Lumba, Kuami Eugene, KiDi, and Efya, amongst others, combine traditional Ghanaian sounds with modern music today and have set him securely in place as a music icon.
