Francisca Lamini is an incredible young lady and has made her mark in the academic space in Ghana. She represented Keta Senior High Technical School (KETASCO) on the 2021 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) and made history as the first female to represent the school and qualify for the finals in 8 years. EARLY LIFE
Frankie Lamini was born and grew up in the beautiful Volta Region of Ghana. Francisca was raised by her amazing mother, Ms. Benedicta Awudi, and her younger brother, Torfic Lamini. Francisca was born into a single-parent household, and although it was challenging, Francisca always drew inspiration from the commitment and sacrifices of Mrs. Awudi.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Francisca’s education started at Sanity International School; she performed well and continued to do well at the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) in 2018 where she received an aggregate of 7, and then went to Keta Senior High Technical School (KETASCO) to study science. NSMQ JOURNEY
Francisca started the National Science and Maths Quiz process while her entire school was anxious for their BECE results. She was inspired to become an NSMQ contestant after seeing some interesting semi-final contests on TV and she deliberately made a decision that she wanted to represent KETASCO. She joined a cohort of 12 NSMQ members during her year one in KETASCO. Together with her teammates James Lutterodt and Bright Senyo Gakpo, she made history as the only female in the 2021 NSMQ finals. Francisca’s team earned third place, which was another victory, given the emotional admiration they received across Ghana as a result of their performance, as well as Francisca winning the Outstanding Female Contestant Award along with a holiday to Dubai and multiple other prizes.
PURSUING HIGHER EDUCATION
After the NSMQ, hopeful of studying medicine, Francisca went back and applied to two universities in Ghana. However, Francisca met a group of CEOs and was encouraged by them to apply to universities outside of Ghana. Thus, she applied to Harvard, Cornell, Stanford and New York University (Abu Dhabi), all of which granted her acceptance into their programs. Francisca ended up choosing Harvard University first and began taking steps towards her aspirations. In her first semester, she received her first five A’s and then had another eight A’s upon taking her WASSCE exams.
LEGACY AND IMPACT
Francisca Lamini is not a student but a beacon of hope for many young girls in Ghana. Through her individual story of perseverance, hardwork and academic feats, she has inspired many people in Ghana and abroad. While she continues to fulfill her ambition to be a medical doctor and come back to Ghana to contribute towards society, she has and will continue to serve as a model and an inspiration for countless young Ghanaians to follow suit and show that, when we believe we can, we can realize our dreams.
